JAKARTA – Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who have been declared as President and Vice President Elect of Indonesia in the 2024 Election, are not confident in running the government with only members from their coalition parties.
Hurriyah, director of the Centre for Political Studies at the University of Indonesia, said that the names of those who fill ministerial positions have usually been dominated by the political cabinet.
Therefore, according to her, the names of people from opposition parties will definitely sit in the Prabowo-Gibran cabinet.
“I think so far the cabinet format in Indonesia has always been a political cabinet dominated by a political cabinet that shows how the people in the cabinet are the result of political compromises, especially with parties,” she said when talking to The Editor.
Unfortunately, Hurriyah continued, Prabowo-Gibran’s victory in the election did not make them confident to form their own cabinet without involving opposition parties.
As it is known, Prabowo-Gibran’s victory in the election did not necessarily give their supporting parties full power in the House of Representatives (DPR).
“But what we always see the trend is that there is a tendency for the elected president and vice president to not be confident enough to form their cabinet without involving the losing group,” he said.
With this concept in mind, Hurriyah believes Prabowo-Gibran will embrace people from opposition parties.
According to her, this attitude has been clearly seen from the meeting between Prabowo Subianto and the Nasdem Party not long ago.
Therefore, it is clear that the political promises made during the election will also change when the coalition parties enter the cabinet.
“We have also seen the signs today. In the post-2024 election, the Prabowo camp was very active in approaching the parties of the coalition of parties that lost the election. For example, they held a meeting with Nasdem and other party leaders. Or statements made by the party leaders of Prabowo’s party coalition are very visible that the formation of the cabinet in Indonesia does not reflect the coalition formed during the election,” she explained.
Strategic ministerial positions such as minister of agriculture and minister of trade, according to Hurriyah, will also face the same fate.
However, she hopes that Prabowo and Gibran will still follow the rules made by President Joko Widodo.
Among them is to put professional names to sit in positions related to economic issues.
It is because that if they only put names from political party officials, Prabowo and Gibran will risk their capacity and performance during their 5 years in office.
