JAKARTA – The significant increase in extreme weather in Indonesia lately has become a concern for the Chairman of Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) AA LaNyalla Mahmud Mattalitti.
In order not to cause further disasters, LaNyalla reminded regional governments to strengthen and prepare mitigation related to the change.
He asked regional governments to coordinate with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
“I encourage immediate disaster mitigation and other mitigation measures to prevent disasters that could take lives,” LaNyalla said on the sidelines of attending the 2024 National Development Planning Conference (Musrenbangnas) held by the Ministry of PPN/Bappenas at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Senayan, Jakarta, Monday (6/5/2024).
The catastrophic forms of increased temperatures, according to him, are drought and extreme rain. Those things must be anticipated quickly so that they do not become widespread.
“Regional governments should communicate intensely with BRIN and BMKG, which are expert institutions in the field of technology and weather,” he said.
“So that they and communities have preparedness and awareness of the latest weather developments. That’s where we all have an understanding of the worst impacts,” he added.
Furthermore, LaNyalla also conveyed the need for weather forecast information to become a daily information need as the community is still putting it aside.
“So far, people have not really cared about weather-related information. That’s why the government also needs to socialize the importance of weather forecast information. Then equip the community with response skills and the ability to cope if there is a warning,” he said.
BRIN found a significant increase in extreme weather in Indonesia.
This is based on a climate change study (2021–2050) specifically for the Indonesian Maritime Continent (BMI) using high-resolution dynamic downscaling techniques.
It then noted that, since September until now, the average monthly temperature increase has reached 1.5 degrees Celsius.
