JAKARTA – Two pairs of presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin) and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD, on Thursday (19/10) registered themselves to the General Elections Commission (KPU).
The pairs came at different times, with different styles, but the same goal: registering for a chance at the 2024 General Election.
The Editor‘s team has summarized the highlights of the first day of registration for presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
Anies Baswedan-Cak Imin
The Anies Baswedan-Cak Imin pair arrived at the KPU Office in Central Jakarta at around 9:30 a.m., but the crowd of their supporters had been packed in the area since around 7 a.m..
Both of them appeared simple with black and white; black pants, plain white shirts, and black caps. According to Cak Imin, the white shirt shows simplicity, practicality, and the spirit of work.
At around 10:00 am, Anies-Cak Imin entered the KPU Office to begin the registration process. The Indonesia Raya song was sung before the registration documents were submitted.
Through his speech, Anies admitted that he was confident that the presidential election that would be witnessed by the Indonesian people would run honestly, fairly and credibly.
Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD
Meanwhile, the Ganjar-Mahfud pair arrived at the KPU Office at around 12.40 WIB. Previously, both of them had stopped by the Tugu Proklamasi to hold a ceremony.
Ganjar appeared in all black, while Mahfud wore black pants, a white shirt, and a black cap.
Mahfud said that the white shirt was none other than the shirt he had prepared when he almost became Jokowi’s companion in the 2019 Election.
According to him, the shirt contains God’s message that asked him to postpone his intention to run in the 2019 elections–and now is the right time.
Ganjar-Mahfud then entered the KPU Office at around 1:00 p.m. and, like the previous pair, immediately went through the registration process.
Through his speech, Ganjar thanked the KPU for organizing the 2024 elections. He hopes that the KPU will continue to carry out its duties as an independent body.
The Next Steps
The files of both pairs were declared complete by the KPU and will be verified starting Friday (20/10).
KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy’ari said that the results of a series of verification efforts will be announced on November 13, when it determines which pairs will become participants in the 2024 elections.
While waiting for the verification results, both pairs are required to undergo medical tests.
The Anies-Cak Imin pair is scheduled to carry out a medical test on Saturday (21/10), while Ganjar-Mahfud is scheduled for Sunday (22/10).
The registration period for presidential and vice-presidential candidates will last until Wednesday (25/10) next week.
