Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Relations with ASEAN Countries, BKSP Holds Working Meeting with Directorate General of International Law and Agreements

JAKARTA – The importance of establishing bilateral cooperation with several neighboring countries is the focus of the latest discussion of the Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSP) of Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD RI).

The ASEAN and Indo Pacific regions are a great potential for world economic growth and attract foreign investment in achieving a broader trade scheme.

It was conveyed by Chairman of BKSP Darmansyah Husein at a joint working meeting with the Directorate General of International Law and Agreements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kutai Meeting Room, Building B of DPD RI in Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Thursday (30/5).

“With the very strategic role of DPD RI as regional representation, we hope this proposal can encourage regional positions that can be integrated in international cooperation,” he said.

Meanwhile, DPD RI member from South Sulawesi Lily Amelia Salurapa questioned the extent of Indonesia’s bargaining value in establishing bilateral cooperation agreements with other countries.

“With more and more countries enthusiastically carrying out cooperation with Indonesia, we ask to be given a clear picture of the extent of Indonesia’s bargaining value in bilateral cooperation,” she said.

On the same occasion, DPD RI member from East Nusa Tenggara Abraham Liyanto asked for an explanation related to bilateral cooperation that had been carried out by Indonesia in various geographical areas as a benchmark of the extent to which the success rate of cooperation built which benefited both countries.

“We as members of DPD RI who represent the region want to be recognised in ASEAN countries, so that there is institutional strengthening. We want to know the development of cooperation that has been carried out by Indonesia with neighboring countries,” he said.

During the meeting, Director General of International Law and Treaties of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Amrih Jinangkung emphasized the urgency of expanding cooperation between countries in the ASEAN region, reinforced by the view that the agreements that have been made by BKSP with the South Korean Assembly and the Senate in Cambodia show positive steps, but require more definite and concrete cooperation.

“In the context of cooperation between ASEAN regions, the agreements with the South Korean Assembly and the Senate in Cambodia have shown positive progress,” he explained.

“However, to ensure that the steps we take go according to plan, more concrete and directed cooperation is needed so that the agreed agreements can run properly,” he continued.
