THE EDITOR – The Alumni of Gadjah Mada University (Kagama) in North Sumatra showcased eight traditional outfits from eight ethnic groups in North Sumatra at the 2024 Nitilaku Cultural Cavalcade event held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and the 15th Lustrum on Sunday (15/12/2024).
North Sumatra Kagama Branch Manager Rehna Maba Mulianta Sitepu said the 2024 UGM Nitilaku event was a moment to enliven the cultural party held once a year at UGM Hall.
The traditional outfits showcased by the North Sumatra Kagama were from Karo, Toba, Coastal tribes, Simalungun, PakPak, and Malay.
Not only that, to make the event even more festive, the Regional Board of the North Sumatra Kagama also enlivened the Cultural Cavalcade with folk songs from North Sumatra by singing songs from 8 ethnicities entitled Layang-layang Selayang Pandang from Malay, Family Taxi from Karo, Pos Ni Uhur from Simalungun, Tirismo Lae Bangkuan from PakPak, Ketabo from Mandailing, Kijom from Angkola, Mena from Nias and Muppat Taluktuk from Toba.
WON THE CULTURAL CAVALCADE EVENT

The efforts of the North Sumatra Kagama Regional Board to enliven the 2024 UGM Nitilaku event paid off as one of the 20 participants won the second place.
Mayasari (38), an alumnus of the Faculty of Law, Master of Notary Department, was declared entitled to take home a prize of Rp500,000 after winning with the Coastal tribe traditional outfit She wear.
Mayasari said that she did not expect to win because all participants from all over Indonesia wore beautiful traditional clothes.
“I am very happy and I did not expect to win. I saw other participants wearing beautiful traditional clothes,” she said.
Mayasari herself said she favoured the other traditional attire worn by participants from the North Sumatra Kagama Regional Board, which reflected the legendary figure from North Sumatra, Datuk Maringgi, and the Karo traditional attire.
The 20 participants of the cultural cavalcade from North Sumatra are reportedly to wear traditional clothing from 8 ethnicities in the province. Among them are the traditional clothes of the Karo, Nias, the coastal tribes, Toba, Mandailing, Simalungun, PakPak or Dairi, and Malay tribes.

To The Editor, Mayasari said that she used traditional clothes from Central Tapanuli which is dominated by red colour and a crown from a collector in Medan.
The traditional clothes that are worn at the wedding of the Coastal tribe are quite heavy, even making Mayasari’s head scuffed after participating in the 2024 UGM Nitilaku cultural cavalcade.
Even so, she admitted that the excitement of the event did not make her feel the slightest pain, especially when she was declared the second winner of the 2024 UGM Nitilaku Fashion Competition.
“It’s okay, it didn’t hurt,” she said.
Mayasari said, the Sibolga traditional clothes she wore were indeed very beautiful and different from other traditional clothes in North Sumatra.
She felt very happy to be able to enliven the Nitilaku UM 2024 event with 20 other participants from North Sumatra to show off the rich culture of one of the largest islands in Indonesia.
WHO ARE THE WINNERS OF THE 2024 NITILAKU CULTURAL CAVALCADE COMPETITION?

For the Fashion Competition category, the first winner was I Made Christian from UGM Graduate School, the second winner was Mayasari from North Sumatera Kagama, and the third winner was Iswari Yuliwati from Kanogama.
Meanwhile, for the Cultural Cavalcade, 1st place was won by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of UGM, 2nd place was won by Graduate School, and 3rd place was won by UGM Residence.
