To detail efforts to achieve the target, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Abdullah Azwar Anas met Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim.

“The target of 1 million GEWA teachers is a manifestation of the government’s commitment to improve the quality of human resources, where education is one of the keys,” said Minister Anas at the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Office in Jakarta, Monday (27/11).

“Today, I met Mr Nadiem to elaborate on this matter. Alhamdulillah, we are optimistic that by 2024 the target of 1 million GEWA teachers can be met because now the progress is significant,” he added.

He explained that the fulfillment of teachers, including through the recruitment programme of 1 million GEWA teachers, is the concern of President Joko Widodo.

The recruitment of 1 million GEWA teachers will come from non-ASN and THK-II teachers who have been serving.

“The Golden Indonesia of 2045, in which the country will enter the world’s top four economies, requires superior human resources–and teachers have a very significant role. Hence, the government is speeding up the recruitment of 1 million GEWA teachers as one of the foundations of improving human resources, which of course will also be supported by the quality of education infrastructure and the nutritional intake of our children,” Anas said.

“Hopefully this meeting with Mr. Nadiem will be a good formula, and we will continue to select and ensure that no one is left behind so that the target of fulfilling the needs of 1 million GEWA teachers can be met,” added Anas, who is also the former head of the Public Procurement Policy Agency (PPPA).

Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim said that the collaboration with the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform is a step to accelerate the fulfillment of 1 million GEWA teachers.

“This is indeed the government’s commitment to implement it and the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform is very supportive so we are sure this can be fulfilled,” he explained.

GEWA teacher recruitment has been ongoing over the past few years.

In 2021 and 2022, there were around 544,000 GEWA teachers from non-ASN teachers and THK-II.

Therefore, 2023 recruitment is predicted to reach around 840,000 GEWA teachers.

The shortage will be met in 2024. In fact, more than 1 million GEWA teachers will be processed in total.

In addition to discussing the fulfillment of teacher needs, the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform and the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology also detailed the career patterns and equitable distribution of teachers in the frontier, outermost, underdeveloped areas.

“This meeting is also to ensure the career and the availability of teachers in the most disadvantaged and outermost areas. We will detail the incentive scheme and later outline it in a Government Regulation. The incentives range from career to income incentives, hopefully we can complete the regulation soon,” Anas said.
