JAKARTA – The Vice Chairman of The House of Regional Representatives of Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) Nono Sampono on Friday (10/3) met the Chief of Naval Staff (KSAL) Admiral TNI Muhammad Ali to discuss the situation of maritime security at the Main Building of the Navy Headquarters (Mabesal), Cilangkap, East Jakarta.

Nono Sampono said that the synergy of maritime security is very important in efforts to increase maritime security.

This is because sea security cannot be carried out separately, but must involve various parties who have a role in maintaining water security.

On this occasion, Nono Sampono conveyed the importance of changing the management of the maritime security system through a limited revision of Law no. 32 of 2014 concerning Maritime Affairs.

The former Head of Basarnas also explained that Indonesia is facing various threats, ranging from the traditional aspect to the defense aspect.

However, in fact, the management, especially in the field of maritime security, is still not effective, especially in terms of synergy and authority for Bakamla, which in carrying out its duties is so great.

The management of a coordinated and integrated maritime security system has actually been envisioned since 1972 through the updated 5 Ministerial Decrees in 1985.

However, this has only been regulated through Law number 32 of 2014 which was initiated by the DPD, because several sectoral laws have emerged which have resulted in overlapping authorities for law enforcement at sea.

“The formation of Law Number 32 of 2014 was an initiative from the DPD RI, therefore it is necessary to make improvements to the Law as strengthening Bakamla in carrying out its duties as the Indonesian Coast Guard,” explained Nono Sampono.

Therefore, it is hoped that improvements to Law number 32 of 2014 will answer the problems of the marine security system for the past 50 years.

Responding to this, the KSAL said that the Indonesian Navy would always be ready to synergize and support all policies issued by the government.

The KSAL also added that an increase in synergy and a combination of joint patrols with other maritime elements urgently needed comprehensive steps.

The implementation of security at sea requires the role and interoperability of each maritime stakeholder.

“This requires an ongoing program that must be carried out between institutions. The Indonesian Navy will always be ready to synergize and support all policies issued by the government,” he said.

Also attending the meeting, the Head of Bakamla RI Rear Admiral TNI Dr. Aan Kurnia, DPD Expert Staff Rear Admiral TNI (Ret.) Dedi Setiadi, Commander of the Republic of Indonesia Armed Forces Rear Admiral Heru Kusmanto, SE, M.M., M.Tr.Opsla, Asintel Kasal TNI Brigadier General (Mar) Suaf Yanu Hardani, and Asops Kasal Kasold TNI Denih Hendrata.
