SPANYOL – Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono attended the 21st meeting of The High-level Experts and Leaders Panel (HELP) on Water and Disasters held in Spain, Monday (26/6).

What made this meeting special was the involvement of the Club de Madrid led by Danillo Turk who was formerly the President of Slovenia.

During the meeting, Basuki invited members of HELP and Club de Madrid to support Indonesia by founding the 10th World Water Forum which will be held in Bali, Indonesia, in 2024 with the Spirit of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung.

“The spirit that we can take from the Asian-African Conference in Bandung in 1955 is deliberation and consensus from state leaders to push water issues to become the main policy of every country. I remind you again, that water is politics,” he said.

The conference, he continued, succeeded in producing an agreement that promoted peace and shared prosperity amid the political tensions that arose in that period.

“Even after 68 years, the spirit of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung is getting more relevant to dealing with many common problems that require a global agreement for a solution,” Basuki said.

The minister stated, the Government of Indonesia believes that the spirit of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung is still very appropriate to be able to embrace diverse political interests.

On this occasion, Basuki also invited Club de Madrid, which consists of former world leaders, to attend the 10th World Water Forum in Bali in 2024.

“Therefore, the Spirit of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung will be the cornerstone of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali in 2024, not only as a philosophical basis, but also as the basic concept of the forum,” he said.

During the meeting, he also proposed establishing World Lake Day to promote the importance of conservation and sustainable use of lakes.

According to him, lakes are closely related to water problems and disasters. Thus, collaboration with HELP will be very much needed and mutually beneficial.

“I also propose this collaborative action as a HELP flagship initiative program led by Indonesia. I welcome the participation of HELP members and advisors,” he added.

Also present accompanying Basuki, Deputy System and Strategy of BNPB Raditya Jati, Expert Staff to the Minister for Technology, Industry and Environment Endra S. Atmawidjaja, and Main Engineers of the Ministry of PUPR Arie Setiadi Moerwanto and Widyaiswara Utama Widiarto.
