JAKARTA – As many as 33.6 million people were recorded as train passengers in Java and Sumatra in October 2023, Statistics Indonesia’s data showed.
This number is the largest compared to the number of domestic air transport and sea transport passengers, as well as providing the largest development compared to the development of both.
From the news release received by The Editor, it is known that the number of domestic air transport passengers in October 2023 was 5.3 million people, or an increase of 5.38 percent compared to conditions in September 2023.
Meanwhile, the number of domestic sea transportation passengers in October 2023 reached 1.7 million people, an increase of 1.86 percent compared to the previous month.
On the other hand, the increase in the number of train passengers reached 6.57 percent, from the previous 31.5 million people to 33.6 million people.
The majority of the number is Jabodetabek train passengers who commute, namely 26.8 million people or 79.77 percent of the total train passengers.
The increase in the number of train passengers occurred in all areas of Jabodetabek, non-Jabodetabek Java, and Sumatra, with each showing an increase of 6.82 percent, 5.51 percent and 6.43 percent.
Cumulatively, the number of train passengers during January–October 2023 reached 303.6 million people, an increase of 37.76 percent compared to the same period in 2022.
Meanwhile, the amount of goods transported by trains in October 2023 is known to have decreased by 1.50 percent compared to the previous month, from 5.5 million tons to 5.4 million tons.
Most of the goods transported were recorded in the Sumatra region, amounting to 4.3 million tons or 79.53 percent of the total goods transported by train.
The decline in the number of goods occurred in the Sumatra region by 2.57 percent, but there was an increase in the non-Jabodetabek Java region of 2.87 percent.
