BENGKULU – Vice chairman of The House of Regional Representative of Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) Sultan B. Najamudin encouraged the government of Indonesia to actively deliver any recommendation to the leaders of Russia and Ukraine as a balanced mediator for the concerns and peace solutions of the two countries.
It was conveyed by Sultan considering that currently Indonesia has quite an important diplomatic role, especially for Russia and NATO member countries as the G20 presidency.
“President Joko Widodo’s wait and see attitude by being non-reactive towards Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is appropriate enough, but it is not enough to stop the conflict and the potential for world war. It is time for Indonesia to be firm, to both countries. Not to side with one of them, but to reconcile the two,” he said through his official statement on Saturday (5/3).
According to him, if it’s left unchecked, a prolonged war will have a direct impact on the national economic sector. However, both countries have a significant trade contribution to Indonesia.
Although we don’t intend to intervene, he continued, both countries need a trusted and respected third party to mediate the escalation.
And if the momentum is right, Indonesia can be relied on at least with its historical role and the G20 presidency.
“The best goal at this time is to ensure that both parties reach a ceasefire agreement. In principle, mice don’t die and cats don’t feel ashamed,” he said.
Furthermore, this former Vice Governor of Bengkulu said that taking an active part in the efforts for world peace is the obligation of the Indonesian people which has been stipulated by the constitution. And peace can only be reached with a diplomatic approach.
Until now, the two countries have not found an agreement for a ceasefire and this is the right time for Indonesia to take a strategic role as a mediator. We pray that peace will soon come true.
