JAKARTA – According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), 13 regions in Indonesia are predicted to experience the dry season soon.
These areas are Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, and Maluku.
Chairman of Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) AA LaNyalla Mahmud Mattalitti reminded regional heads whose areas are threatened by long dry season to take mitigation and strategic steps as an effort to prevent and anticipate the impact of drought, extreme temperature rise, forest and land fires, and crop failure.
“As there is a threat of a long dry season predicted by BMKG, I ask all regional heads to respond to this warning by carrying out mitigation in their respective regions. This effort needs to be done to minimize casualties, both material and mental,” he said on Tuesday (4/6).
According to the Bugis man, the dry season is a challenge that requires strong precautions and vigilance.
Thus, mitigation is also a joint task and not only the local government. Rather, across agencies, institutions, and communities.
That’s why regional heads are obliged to coordinate with the central government, BPBD, River Basin Agency, Agriculture Agency, Environment Agency, and other related agencies.
According to LaNyalla, who is a senator from East Java, community awareness and cooperation is also important in dealing with the dry season to reduce negative impacts and ensure sustainable survival.
“The community also needs to be given an understanding not to do things that can trigger disasters, especially settlement, forest and land fires,” he said.
