BANYUWANGI – Hundreds of Banyuwangi Public Works (PU) personnel held a celebration to mark the 79th Public Works Day at the Indoor Tennis Court, Tawang Alun Sports Hall, Wednesday (4/12/2024). At this moment, Acting Regional Secretary Guntur Priambodo invited all public works personnel to continue to provide the best work for the people of Banyuwangi.
Hundreds of public works personnel who attended the celebration came from the Public Works Office of Cipta Karya Housing and Settlement and the Public Works Office of Irrigation and the Banyuwangi Regional Drinking Water Company (PDAM). The event was also attended by the Banyuwangi Regent Assistants and a number of Heads of Regional Apparatus Organisations (OPD).
“The commemoration of Public Works Day is a momentum for all Banyuwangi development personnel to rejuvenate our shared enthusiasm and commitment to develop the region with the best works for the community,” said Guntur.
He revealed that the commemoration of Public Works Day, which is usually celebrated every 3 December, comes from the historical background of the heroic struggle in the early days of independence.
After the establishment of the Republic of Indonesia, the Public Works Department occupied Gedung Sate in Bandung as its headquarters. However, this position was disturbed by the arrival of the allies who also accompanied the Dutch in October 1945.
“When defending Gedung Sate from the Dutch attack, 7 public works employees died. That moment is now commemorated as Public Works Day and also the anniversary of the Ministry of Public Works,” he explained.
“This is a part of history that needs to be known by all PU people that there must be challenges and struggles in developing a region,” he continued.
Guntur also emphasised that every development work carried out needs to seriously pay attention to the interests of the community. Not just to meet the output and outcome targets of government programmes.
“Because people’s expectations are actually simple: smooth road infrastructure, sturdy and adequate bridges, irrigation channels that can irrigate agricultural land, and access to clean water for all people both in cities and villages. This is what we must realise altogether,” he said.
The celebration was also carried out by giving donations to orphans, and finished by eating tumpeng together by all PU personnel.
